My Thorichthys Aureus tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks guys! I love these guys, their color is definitely coming in, lots of reds and golds depending on their moods. They like to chase and flair their gills to show off their colors but actually I don’t think there is a torn fin in the bunch. Definitely a fun tank to watch.

I was looking at again at your older pictures and noticed the leaves on the bottom of your tank. I really like them, what type are they?

Thanks, the color definitely is coming in on your little guys too.

I got them in November a few weeks before my first post in this thread. And I’d say the largest has grown easily 3 inches and a couple inches tall. Or roughly about 3-4 times the size of when I got him. However the smallest is only about twice the size as when I got him. They definitely have various rates of growth. However I’m a Terrible gauge of rate of growth because I only feed once a day, and just do weekly water changes. This makes for slow growing fish. I’ve seen people do the feeding 3 times a day and water changes daily, I just frankly can’t keep up. I work too much for all that.

As for the leaves, they are a mix of mini and large catappa leaves, one of the bags even had small pine cones mixed in. I really liked the look, and I even like the leftover ground debris. I’m definitely getting more. However I’ve used Oak leaves in the past and they worked just as well. I just happen to see the catappa leaves cheap on amazon and Figured I’d try them.

Definitely make the water tannin filled, and I believe that’s partly why mine started getting darker I believe. The mix of the woods and leaves staining the water so bad. The lily pads don’t help either. Lol they block a lot of light. But overall it really makes for a neat natural looking tank. At least I think.

Same here, once a day and weekly water changes.

I may try some of the catappa leaves myself. I have quite a few "pods" of various types scattered on the bottom and really like the look along with my driftwood.

Do you have an FTS you could post?

Nothing really big to update in the past two weeks. But I’ll gladly take some more pictures this evening when the lighting is abit better.

Looking forward to more. I am guessing growth is pretty slow like other thorichthys. My panchovillai are only 3-4” and I’ve had them for almost 3 years now. Pasionis and meeki are definitely faster growing, but not by much.

I want to thank you guys, because of you I narrowly avoided possible catastrophe. I forgot to take pictures yesterday, so after I got the notification tonight I went and reached in the tank with the scrub brush to clean the glass for pictures and was greeted by an electric shock.

Apperently my heater was malfunctioning and starting to shock the water. Who knows what kind of damage that could have caused if I had let it go till Saturday. When I do my water changes. I’ve been thinking about going heaterless anyways seeing how it’s mid summer and the majority of the day the tank stays around 76F anyways. Well now is my chance lol.

So I did a water change, cleaned the sponge filter on the return pump, and cleaned the glass. I will take pics tomorrow when the water is clear. But I’m greatful I checked the water tonight. Thank you.

Yeah very happy to hear! I've been thinking about pulling out my heater during the summer too.

Glad you’re ok.

Go heaterless. I don’t use one in my thorichthys tank, no issues. I worry more about the temp going up then down.
