Is there a certain point that once it's reached it can't be undone even if the fish stops?
I'd think so. Scarring of the soft tissue as well as modification of the cartilage or bone can occur as a result of physical contact, soft but repeated, dramatic but singular, etc.

Who knows. Maybe not.

It's not smashing into things mainly swims back and forth and then up against the glass. Not a nervous fish at all
 
One thing I would add and this is just my opinion but I think the min tank required for these guys has to be BIG. My tank is 96x30 and this fish uses ever inch of it. I'd say smallest would be 96x36

This may be too early for a for-life judgement. Let's see what the state of things is in 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 years.

But oh, how generous! An extra avenue of 96"x6" would be delightful to sashay along :D
