Jardini Tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh yeah lots of possibilities. Im probably not even helping with all my rambling suggestions. Last thing I'll say is if you do want tankmates then go with the oscar. They are much friendlier than the other fish mentioned, just make sure the other fish have some size on them to avoid being eaten.
I’m sort of beginning to lean more towards the jag, Midas and Jardini rather than the Oscars. Don’t get me wrong I love Oscars but I have owned them before so maybe I might get a fish that I’ve never kept before. But I really don’t know whether to go with the jag or Midas once I decide that I’ll decide if I want a Jardini or one of the two cichlids. This is the only way I’m going to be able to decide hahahah

If you want a solo fish, the jardini would work for a long time at least, though eventually a larger tank would be better. Jaguar would be cool too.
I've kept solo wet pets in the past, they are cool but unless you really have a special connection with the fish it can be a bit boring.

If you want a community I'd go for an Oscar or two with some other SA fish like flagtail, pinktail chalceus, red atabapo pikes.

Just my preferences, you have lots of options with the 180. The only ideas you mentioned which I don't think would work, would be jardini with tankmates, and giant gourami.

I was planning to get either a jag, Jardini or Midas to be the centrepiece fish and then maybe add some schooling fish like clown loaches etc. What other options do I have I’m interested in quite large fish that have a personality and are quite aggresive?

Clown loaches would probably end up being expensive snacks. I'd go for something with a tall body shape which is fast moving, like silver dollars. Even those may get killed but probably have a better chance than loaches.

Some big fish which would be great as a solo fish in a 180- Haitensis, Paratheraps Zonatus (or argentea… any large vieja), amphilophus hogaboomorum (like midas but a little different)

here's my big old male hogaboomorum at about 14"

Hm I have heard of the haitensis, what are they like? Also ive read that giant Gourami have a good personality, however they get massive. Will they be able to live in a 180?

I've never kept haitensis, wish I had they are one of my favorite looking species. Supposedly they are similar to large amphs etc, very aggressive.
Giant gourami I believe would outgrow a 180 after a few years, really would need a 300+. I've seen some close to 2' in person, and they are very bulky fish, much more body mass than, say, a 2' arowana.

I thought so. Man I’m struggling to decide right now. I’ve got ideas but I’m not sure if they would work.

If you buy something and regret it later, could always sell it and start again! Also you'll have plenty of time to keep everything you want, life is long (hopefully) and this is a lifelong hobby!

I’ve done some more research and I have an idea. I was thinking about buying a green arowana or Banjar red and put Oscars in with the aro. Would this work?
