My LFS just got a shipment in..anyone on forum have any experience with the SunSun HW-5000 Canister Filter.. saw some Youtube commercials but looking for unpaid endorsements............1200GPH ???

The HW-5000 is the newest canister filter from SunSun (2019). The HW-5000 features a removable DC pump with SINE wave technology— more energy efficient than regular canister pumps. Includes a Smart Digital Controller that allows users to adjust the water flow rate and UV sterilizer’s “ON” time. The ceramic impeller is more durable and can be used with freshwater and saltwater aquariums. The HW-5000 also includes 3 media baskets that are easy to clean. Big media baskets provide users the ability to add large amount of different filter media (not included). An adjustable tube holder can be mount on the aquarium with a 7/8″ rim and can be remove for aquarium with larger rim. Bottom drain hole with valve allow for easy maintenance of canister. Easy to start, no priming necessary, simply add water and turn on the power. Pump Wattage: 50W. Max head height: 4M (13Feet). Max Flow Rate: 1200GPH (4600L/H). Dimension: 15″x15″x21.7″ (38x38x55CM).

I would only use sun sun as absolute last resort, they are not quality filters

Saw some of those same videos and the new HW-3500 is very interesting indeed, would like to get a couple but recently checked and for some reason they're not available in Thailand yet so far as I can see. Would also like to get an FX but they're definitely not available here and international shipping would throw off the price to value ratio way, way out of proportion.

But this latest Sunsun effort definitely seems to have some plus points, even daresay advantages over the FX6. Insofar as reliability only time will tell -- many peeps have had both great and bad experiences with Sunsuns (esp. older ones) -- but this can be said of nearly any canister, even generally more dependable ones such as FX's, Eheim etc. And the general online consensus imo seems to be that Sunsun have certainly gotten better in this regard in the last couple of years even if they are still somewhat behind.

I'm newer to canisters but in the 8 months I've been running 2 X Sunsun 704a on two tanks I've not had any trouble whatsoever, and great flow rate on returns, they've been very dependable and are doing their jobs.

While Sunsun will likely never have the overall quality of Fluval, many would agree that the FX certainly are not twice as good as Sunsun (as nearly reflected in usual price differentiation). As many say, if you have the cash to burn buy the FX; if expense to value ratio is also important, a newer model Sunsun will get the job done just fine.

Maybe you also saw this video by Ben Ochart -- he was comparing the Sunsun 704b and Fluval FX6, both of which he likes very much. Interestingly, during the making of the video the Fluval actually broke lol (though Ben still believed the FX was better overall -- again, just not twice better).

care to define on quality filters?

I always thought a filter main purpose is flow rate so as long as we give a discount on a MIC canister filter flow rate, it should not be that bad right?

I would call a quality filter one that I can rely on. One that keeps going for years. One that doesn’t leak. I consider flow rate immaterial compared to reliability. There’s even something to be said for low flow rate, which allows for longer contact with the filter media. Flow rate has to be seen in total turnover with regard to the aquarium volume. Reliability is a standalone definition of quality IMO

Agree on this. There is no filter that beats eheim 2260 and 2262 in quality. Ive got two of them from the 90s and have changed some gaskets in them. Thats all.

i don't disagree, but i think china brands has the tendency to over declare specs so i would discount their specs. Not about good or bad but more of knowing what you are buying

I agree reliability is very important but i am not too sure i will appreciate one that last for many many years and it be a waste to change them if it is still working.... the reason would be due to technological advancement where newer canister may be more energy efficient.... so it may be more reliable but may not be energy efficient / cost effective.

This is my layman thinking

With almost 90% of all products in the world being made in china..... i doubt we can enjoy the same reliability as yesteryears... not only filters but almost everything

And with their reputation to use the same tech but sell under a chinese brand for cheaper prices..... it may be just as reliable..

I always feel that jebao filters are OEM ehiem.... lol

Yeah that is so true. But if where to buy a new cannister i would not pay for an fx4/6 or some knockoff. Id buy an 2260. They are pricey but the are reliable like no other filters.
