Arowana Keepers Please Help.

That is not the best mindset to have when it comes to fish. Everybody can buy a baby fish that will grow into a monster but when that baby grows up not everybody can take care of the monster. Finding someone that can handle it is not a guarantee and it is best to just not get the fish if you can not handle it.

Thanks. I was also thinking on that. I did the same mistake in past several times. Finding a new owner is not difficult. I know some people who own gigantic tanks. But I decided to get something else like maybe large Oscars or some other cichlids. I thought I had space in my room but when I measured today it is good for a 4 to 5 feet tank maximum. I really really wanted something exotic like arowana or freshwater stingrays but I guess I can't even keep stingrays in a 5 feet tank as well.

What is the maximum width you can make the tank?

60 cm width is mostly tank comes with. Thinking to buy a ready made tank. I read that its ok to keep stingrays in such width but then also read they can out grow. Conflicting information.

An ray is absolutely not okey to keep in an tank thats 60cm deep. Even an retic or hystrix that grows to 30-35cm over its disk is a lot of ray.

This is one of my femalerays. She is currently 36cm over her disk and is in an 150x60x60 tank due to her being pregnant. I keep her in this tank right now to monitor her precnancy. You can see how much of a fish it is.

So long we are expressing private opinions, I don't see anything wrong with peers raising a fish temporarily if they have arranged for a proper forever home before they even bought the fish. What's wrong with that? Getting to interact with an animal and learn about it firsthand for some time is better than never or only by books, internet, and TV.

150 x 60 cm / 5'x2' footprint won't allow you to keep an arowana for long, perhaps a year, if silver or african arowana, or longer if other arowanas, which is not too shabby, if you arrange for a solid plan for the fish after it outgrows your tank. IMHO.

As for the stingrays, they are perhaps the most dangerous fish we ever keep, after electric eels and catfish. We know of stingray aficionados with decades-long experience who get stung and even quit the hobby altogether because of it. Getting stung will get you in a hospital for a varied length of time. So, what I am saying, think 7 times before you get them.

Exactly why I've never kept rays -- been sorely tempted but I'm pretty sure some time or another I'd be stung, I'm too weird accident prone lol. And given I'm allergic to (some) bees and spiders I wouldn't be shocked if same happened with a ray sting. In either case as you say I'm sure it wouldn't be fun, hats off to all you adrenaline junkie stingray keepers out there!

5x2x2 or 6x2x2 should be ok for an asian arowana... of course ideally the bigger the better

Since the more water volume the better, you can try go for 2.5 height

You can still have a few tankmates

Your fish is gorgeous and yes its very big. Need a lot of width too and a gigantic tank. Good luck with the pregnancy. That's very cute.

Thanks dear. I actually didn't know if freshwater stingrays are dangerous. I will certainly never own such a fish. I do remember what happened to Steve Irwin. About Arowana I thought to get a small sized and re home. Re homing is always very easy option for me. Some fish stores near me will take it gladly. They have these very huge tanks having stingrays, eels and giant koi fish etc. They can take it. But everyone here stopped me for going for an arowana. I can get an Asian arowana about 15 cm long which I think will be fine in a 150cm long tank for quite some time. Don't know really if I shall but it or not and enjoy it for a year or two. If I do can I put some other fish like oscars or any other with arowana? With Asian or silver.

You can try many other fish with arowana. The thing is in smallish tanks, it is often a gamble, especially with the more aggressive arowana as Asian and Australian. You can most certainly try with almost any tank mate that won't fit in arowana's mouth but watch closely and be prepared to remove the tank mates at any point.

Galantzspeed and I have not steered you away from trying an arowana, for two.
