New 125 all male peacock and Hap tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Anyone have experience in female Haps? I keep seeing all male Haps tank and I know it’s the best color. I wonder how the female temperament are.

Would an all female Haps tank work better long term? For example, I like the looks of several female Hap, such as the Fosso,Modoka, Blue Dolphin, Deep Water Haps, Venustus and Livingstonii.

So would it be possible for me to keep 2-3 female of each of this in a tank with relatively peace compare to an all male tank?

Thanks

There is no harm with keeping Hap males & females together. A large percentage of Hap females are silver & drab looking compared to their male counterparts.
Predator Haps grow relatively large. Their breeding aggression can become quite severe towards tankmates.

Right, agree, that’s why I am wondering if I have a tank of just female of these Haps, are the female less aggressive in an all female only, NO male tank? I actually do like the looks of these females, Venustus, Mdoka, Fosso, Livingstonii, Deep Water Haps etc..

However, I don’t want to breed or have mix male, female tank to avoid aggression from breeding. So if the aggression of female is significant less than male, I might look to setup an all female tank, but only if it will be less aggression and rehome comparing to all male tank.

I have a seperate tank with several Hap & Peacock females. No aggression problems. Bought them as tiny juveniles, hoping for males. Lol.
Are they adults?

I would love to have 3 of each in a 125, Fossorochromis rostratus, Mdoka, Venustus, Livingstonii, Deep water Hap and Blue Dolphin.

Thats 18 large fish in a 125, but females are smaller, will it work?

Thanks

I think your 125 g. female tank would work.
Look at female VC 10's & Tiawan Reef's.

I like the VC10, I currently have an adult VC10 male and it changes between all blue to bulky bar. I like the look with the bar. To be honest, with most of the Haps, I like the adult look that’s not full mating dress. Once they go into mating dress, they are all kind of all blue and kind of the similar look to me.

Another female I want to get is the Exochromis anagenys. I have been trying to find a adult male for awhile with no luck.

I just saw a decent used 125 on Craigslist, thinking of getting it. Then order couple of Juvenile of each fish I want, raise them in the new 125.

Get my 300 slowly setup, move all the Male from the current 125 into it. Then move the male from the juvenile 125 into the 300 if I don’t already have one, If duplicate male, donate to a friend or something, keep all the female.
If I am luck, I get mostly female with 1 of each male I current don’t have. That would be the perfect case. :-)

One more question, do you think I should order 4 of each, hoping 1 male ,3 female, if not the ratio I want, order more. Or order more now and expect to rehome?

Thanks

Looks like lots of good info here in this thread,

Only going to share my experience. I ordered 24 Africans - 2 species -

One was 10m / 2 f - total random pick of Juvinile

I’m not even sure about the other group... I’ve recently separated the two species...

That group of 12 may sadly be a similar ratio... 11m / 1 f ....

I’d order designated m/f fish if you can, I know it costs more but...

Next time I put together a colony I’ll order specific m/f to get the proper ratios...

GL! And pics when you get em!
