Not eating and swalowed mouth

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was also going to suggest a female holding but the mouth area up to the pectoral fin looks pinkish to me or blurry in the video so a clear photo on both sides of the fish would be extremely helpful.

Females will still produce and lay eggs and pick them up even without a male in the tank. She will eventually eat them.

Obviously my first inclination is to say that it is a holding female. I have had Africans in the past produce eggs without a male to fertilize them. I had a Venustus drop eggs while swimming being chased by other fish in the tank, that were eating the eggs. I also had a very young female drop eggs once without scooping them up in her mouth.
I have never seen a female hold unfertilized eggs in their mouth but I would guess it is not out of the realm of possibility. Mbuna are rarely kept as solitary specimens in my experience so this behavior might not be seen often.

Hard to tell with the video if it’s duck lips or some type of infection. Don’t know about the mouth brooding being a solo fish. Maybe duanes duanes or RD. RD. may know.

Its been 2 weeks now, she is still with a swallowed mouth, i think its even more then it was. She is eating but less then she was befor it happened, what do you think? shouldent she spit the eggs by now?
