Flowerhorn fry not eating a lot

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
even though he has his stress colors you can see some future pearling on the face and some red thatll intensify on his cheek and most likely spread down his chest he should look pretty nice as an adult if i had to guess. ive raised some that looked similar as fry and got pretty colorful within a couple months of high temps and high quality food. most of the other fry id watch at the store not change in appearance so i think allot could be attributed to their diet, temps, and water quality.

some of the biggest factors in flowerhorn color is comfort so if you give him a cave so he doesnt have to huddle up in the corner he should color up quite differently. those black bars indicate stress if you didnt know yet. mine lose allot of color if i turn my aquarium lights on (the light hits the FH tank rack so i almost never do). one of mine lost all his colors for weeks after being moved to a new tank where the bottom of tank was a different color and he was trying to blend in. or theyll lose allot of color if not at the optimal temp.

He stay inside a fake plant or I have a yellow submarine which he loves but I took out today because I was cleaning the tank a bit and forgot to put it back in for him (I just put it back for him) and the water is like 70° I don’t have a thermometer in there but the water is pretty cold but during the day it warms up a bit but I’ve been trying to find a cheap easy way to heat it without having to buy another heater for the reason that I don’t know how much heat the plastic tote can take I’m sure 78-80° won’t cause any harm but still don’t wanna take chances since I don’t know the limits of the tote but if you know any ways to heat water other than a heater please let me know so far I’ve only tried putting a bottle of boiling water in the tank and it didn’t work much it did a bit but not nearly enough I still need to try insulation but not sure how

i have a turtle filter(small internal canoster filter that creates a decent amount of heat. uv sterilizers and other powered appliances will create a decent amount of heat especially if the tank is completely covered so that no heat is let out. you could try putting your airpump if youre running a sponge filter or airstone ontop of a heated aquarium so that its pumping hot air into the FH tank. personally id just get a heater. the flowerhorn should do fine in the lower 70s most cichlids do. ive noticed temperature stability is more important than a particular temperature to their color.

if the flowerhorn does fully color up or color up significantly you may want to keep him at the same temp instead of changing it again.

personally flowerhorns are one fish where id recommend using a heater and most fish in my opinion do not need one.

if hes had those black stripes the entire time youve had him then id say it probably has to do with temperature and his appetite will also be much less than a flowerhorn thats kept at 80F+ or 30C which could be why yours isnt eating very much.

Then I’ll just buy a heater off Amazon or something this week

you could try sealing it off all the motion energy from the impeller is converted to heat energy and could probably produce enough heat if the tank is sealed well enough. if the pump housing is in the tank itll be even more effective.

Can you explain this a bit more please

since energy is never destroyed only transferred the spinning impellers energy is released as heat. if you touch your pump housing right after your filter is running it will be hot. if a propeller is placed underwater and spun quickly it will release its energy as heat. if the tank is sealed the temperature of the water will rise because the heat cant escape.
