Ironically I believe the main reason why we're usually unable to discuss certain topics in a civil manner on the forum is because of the plethora of misinformation out there, the same misinformation that is causing a stalemate in your conversation with skj.
The main reason is it’s usually never civil. Bad joke is said. Someone says a cuss word, then another says something slick and then members go at each other. Members start to pick sides. Thread is derailed. It’s a domino effect from what I’ve seen. That’s how it ends with the thread locked. Willing to keep the discussion open as long as everyone is civil. So far it has.

Indeed. We''re each entitled to our own opinions but not our own facts ;)
Hello; I get that this is supposed mean I only have opinion and you have all the facts. Not the case of course. By now my credibility is decided about by members who read my posts. I do argue using opinion and I do use facts as well. I mostly respond to your posts when you put a spin on my comment and/or try to imply my take on things is misinformed. The post I am now replying to is an example. One of the more subtle ones to be sure, but an attempt to infer my comments are inferior to your "facts".
Thing is I am willing to have those who read my posts make up their own minds.

Here's how it works: It's a fact (or at least supported by evidence) if its supported by rigorous science from places like the CDC. It's an opinion if posters on a fish forum feel it's credible without supporting evidence.

So how is a fact... a fact when the people stating the facts change said facts weekly/monthly ?

another fact is states that went into rigorous lock downs fared no better than states that hardly shut down. My kids have been in school since August. Not one student or staff member was hospitalized from covid. Many neighbors and friends had covid, infact some family members had it as well.

1 simple fact is the world economy will not survive another shut down. That said if your vaccinated and still do not feel safe self quarantine but expecting others to follow suit is just ridiculous at this point.

Appreciate the perspective. Australia is in the place it is because your leaders made the hard decisions to get the virus under control and your people - by and large - adhered to the social contract that we're all in this together.

What's this ? please explain. These are facts are they not ?

Sorry but I am not yet ready to bend down and worship the Center for Disease Control, or the Wuhan Lab for Novell Coronavirus Research.

Now, I am sure that a lot of fine folks work in both places.

But I don’t have a lot of faith in the people standing behind the people that run them.

Working Doctors, scientists, and engineers don’t run these places. Political appointees do.

They've raised our alert level back up to 2 because an Australian tourist with covid came to Wellington and ran around to a whole bunch of tourist sites. He was staying at the hotel right next to my work.

Not a strict lockdown, it's basically just reinstating social distancing and limiting social gatherings to 100 people. Bit annoying that probably means the show one of my cats was going to be in this weekend is cancelled.

I'm definitely pro lockdown, not doing the US's half assed or non existent lockdowns is probably one of the biggest reasons we've been business as usual, except for a few little speedbumps for the last year.

I think you are right in saying if there is a lockdown it has to be very very strict for it to work. I recall the NZ lockdown being even more harsh than our melbourne one and ours was not fun at all. I remeber all the opposition politicians complaining we had the harshest lockdown in the world but it did work in eliminating the virus. If we didnt start letting more overseas arrivals in there wouldnt be any covid here at all now.
My relatives in the UK were telling me about the so called lockdown over there and it seemed more like a way to limit numbers of people in places than actually not letting anyone in at all. I think that was their first one, the 2nd was a lot tougher.

Another thing in both our favours is we are islands so we have a lot more control over who gets in than somewhere in europe or even the US.

I wouldnt say im pro lockdown as such but I am happy that we had one that worked and the few small ones didnt get out of hand so we have had a pretty normal lif for the last 9 months.

Simple: As we learned more about the virus from research and experience, that was reflected in guidance. That's how science works. It's a process of learning an discovery and not static.

"another fact is states that went into rigorous lock downs fared no better than states that hardly shut down."

Let's move this discussion away from US states and toward a group of states in Europe: "When compared to other Scandinavian countries with similar population profiles, Sweden has fared much worse and recorded a significantly higher number of deaths than its neighbours, all of which have had tougher restrictions during much of the pandemic."

"It is hard to separate all the factors that might have caused this, but the absence of strict lockdown measures is likely to have contributed.
There's also no evidence that Sweden's economy did any better than its neighbours."

"Although Sweden chose not to lock down early in the pandemic, with bars, restaurants and shops remaining open, increasingly tighter legally-binding restrictions have been imposed over the last five months.
These include a ban on public gatherings of eight or more people, limits on numbers in stores, gyms and on bookable public transport and a stop on serving food and drink after 20:00.
Daily reported deaths have been falling since early January, but the infection rate remains high."

Hello; Looked up some stats this morning. Not sure when the numbers were compiled but the above chart is the current one posted on a CDC information site. CDC COVID Data Tracker

The numbers reflect a similar breakdown as a few months ago. The numbers do not become significant until the age group of 50-64.

The last three groups together age 65 to 85 add up to 80% of the deaths.

The first four groups together age 0 to 49 adds up to 4.9% of the total deaths.

I am in the 65 -74 group. I got the vaccine because of the stats for old people. I also went and got an antibody test before getting the first shot which was negative. Had it been positive I would have skipped a vaccine shot.

I do not have children so my take on having a child under 17 vaccinated has no personal outcome. At 2/10ths of one percent the risk of death is very low. There are some reports of problems with possible connections to vaccines. Not yet clear to me how serious to take the reports, but as I understand it the CDC has issued a warning of some sort. I will look this up. Something to do with the heart is the latest I have heard. I also will look to see if any more has been decided about blood clots.

My personal take is if I was under 50 years of age and without co-morbidities, I might skip a vaccine. At 73 I figured the odds of problems with the vaccines might be less than an infection so I got the shots. Wish I had stopped at one shot since the second shot made me very ill for one day and I spent a second day resting up from being sick that first day. I guess I could have functioned the second day but had nothing pressing enough.
