I’m thinking of changing to oscars….help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok I clearly have underestimated the size needed for oscars. I’m going to have to think hard about my plans. As much as I want an Oscar I can’t get my head around swapping out my 20 haps and peacocks for 1 Oscar. A pair maybe but one fish in this tank……not so sure. I’ll think hard on what’s best. Thanks for all the advice.
I have personally gone from various African cichlids to various SA and Central American cichlids back to African and then back to Americans over many years in the hobby.... and for me personally it would take some special fish to ever go back to Africans again... JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION and experience but Americans show alot more personality, intelligence and interaction with you than what any African peacocks will... so if you are after that interaction than trade up your group of peacocks for an Oscar or better yet upgrade to a larger tank and get a pair of Oscars. They are a fantastic wet pet. My 300g pictured below with 3yr old pair of Oscars and friends..20220211_214043.jpg20220211_210557.jpg

Amazing!!!!’ And that’s exactly what I am after a wet pet that interacts with me and my family. I love my Africans but I just don’t get what I am wanting from them now. Beautiful but very in personable, I get more from my snakehead fish and that’s what I really want now. Your tank and oscars look absolutely amazing!!!
Given the size of my tank 5 ft 450 litres and 61 inches high and 21 inches front to back would it be possible to do say a group of Geos and 1 Oscar? And go from there?
Thanks for your help

You will be absolutely fine with 2 in that size tank, nothing else though. It is pushing it a little bit but you'll be ok with a good maintenance routine and good filtration. Good luck.

So I can do a pair of geophagus and 1 Oscar. Would any other fish work with these? I was thinking smaller fish. Just so I get a feel for the whole stocking plan.

I currently have 2 FX6s on my tank so tons of filtration and already do 50% water changes weekly.

No just x2 oscars nothing else. No tank mates. As I say the tank is pushing the limits so I'd forget the geophagus. Oscars are extremely territorial as they get a little older and I think you would have a problem on your hands further down the line. Now if the tank was a lot larger you would probably just get a bit of chasing. Its all about territory in they're heads and there needs to be enough or there’s going to be carnage believe me. I'm sure some will agree and others will disagree that's the nature of this hobby but this is my opinion anyway.

Just a thought but you could have a really nice CA or SA tank if you eliminate the Oscars.

No as my whole motivation to do this is for the Oscar. So you would not recommend one Oscar and say 2-3 geos? Seems like a big enough tank

I had a pair of oscars in a 125g 6’ tank and they had enough space IMO but keeping water quality good was very difficult (even with two large canister filters) and not something I would want to do again, it was very stressful.
I hear you but I’m used to doing at least 50% water changes weekly on my African tank anyway….
