None were in the pond, all stayed in the tank. The pond is for when I get a pair, but frankly I think I want to keep the tank and use the pond for something else. The tank is so fun to watch, and they are nearly invisible from above .

Any experience with:

Crenicichla missioneira
Crenicichla minuano
Crenicichla vittata

There is opportunity to buy some but i am not sure if they can take temporary cooling like gymno rhabdotus or gymno mekinos/gymnogenys ?

They are caught in Uruguay or Paraguay area so they need low temperatures for a few months. Vittata gets 14"+ so it will eventually get a chance to eat your gymnos.

My balzani have, once again, screwed up my plans for outdoor breeding. There are now a couple dozen free- swimming fry doing their thing in my community tank, from two separate spawns. Many more have been eaten, but those that grew a wee bit and learned to hide are hanging in there...and two other females are currently chewing on new broods as well.

That's great, but the stock tanks outside are still under a couple feet of snow that is just beginning to melt and two more inches fell yesterday. My/their timing is a bit off...

Amazing. For years balzani were one of my dream fish...and now I have started to use them as feeders...?
