What's your maintenance schedule like? How long has the tank been setup?
0 nitrate is the holy grail of water parameters most keeper strive for but miss. 0 ammonia is easier achieved.

Twice weekly water changes with 25-30% change. Just downgraded from a 6ft to 4ft. Tank setup about 2 weeks with some water from the old tank.

He said live food causes elevated ammonia cause some of the uneaten food may get stuck in the filter and this causes ammonia and nitrate production. I'm not sure about his tank but I don't understand why my Ammonia doesn't go down to 0 despite my nitrate and nitrite being 0. I even added some live plants and all but still at 0.25.

What type of test kit do you have?

Your nitrate should really never read 0. That's why we are guessing your tank is not cycled. Two weeks is probably not long enough to cycle a new tank. Did you reuse media from old set up? With these fish why would you go to a smaller tank? Also how do live feeders get stuck in the filter? Seems more of an issue for uneaten non live food.

You should definitely increase your water change percentage to 50% twice weekly.
Also old aquarium water does nothing because you're bacteria is sessile and will be adhered to the object such as ornaments, aquarium walls, and most importantly on the bio media in the filter.

I honestly would have liked if you found us first because we would have said the downgrade is not good. Adult stingrays require large aquariums because it will make maintaining the water quality of the aquarium with the Aro and stingrays easier.

I downgraded because it cost way too much to maintain a 6 feet. And I only have a juvenile aro, baby tin foil and a juvenile ray now. So I think 4 feet is more than enough. Will upgrade again when I move house next year and as they grow.

Ok will try to increase to 50%.
