Hi Everyone,

I am inexperienced in Cichlids but would like to get in the near future some Severums and Oscars in some different tanks in a fish room.

I have a question about venting monogamous South American Cichlids. I may have to vent some fishes somewhere down the line.

Say I got 13 unsexed Severums.

Spawning time comes, I assume only some of them will form pair/s and spawn.

At that time, will I be able to vent all the fish? or just the spawning pair/s?

Many Thanks!

Don't have any experience with Severums.
Hopefully this helps

Venting isn’t always easy. Sometimes it’s very hard to tell the difference.

Seems easier with females that have bred before…maybe the hole gets bigger? Not sure but I have vented some known males and females, and unsexed ones, and it drove me crazy.

Thanks! Though my question is not just confined to Severums. I think it applies to Oscars, Convicts, Firemouths. Any monogamous fish from South or Central America.

Yeah. I read venting is only accurate after spawning. Therefore if some females dont spawn, then their ovipositors dont grow larger, hence the females that dont spawn cant be vented since their ovipositor is smaller looking like the males.

Which severums are you considering?

Currently wanting the "Red Spotted Green Severum" and "Rotkiels". Also wanting an all male show tank.
I've been told that the bloodline of the "Red Spotted Greens" and questionable as this is a trade name. So I might not be able to tell their gender from secondary sexual characteristics. Which means I might be forced to vent if I need to identify gender.

That's why I ask, spawning time comes around, will I be able to vent all the fish?
or better yet, can females that don't spawn be vented?

How big of a tank? An all male tank of SA cichlids will fight over territory, even the more peaceful ones like Severums.

Oscars and firemouths follow the same venting, though I will also note that firemouth males will get longer streamers than females. Convicts you don't need to vent. The orange on females comes in once they hit about an inch, but can be seen even earlier with a flashlight. If there's no orange, it's a female.

11'x5x2.5.

Thanks.
Say I had 7 Oscars in a large enough tank.
Will be able to vent all the fish in the tank when spawning time comes? Can the females that don't spawn be vented?
