I have a flowerhorn rn, super aggressive and constantly bites me when feeding. Seems to be more interested in biting me actually. Also kinda sad they dont get old, mine got rectal prolapse when I got it (dont search it up!)
General comment on flowerhorns. The females aren't prone to the issues the males suffer from. They don't get the big guts and squashed organs. Grossly underrated, some are absolutely gorgeous especially when grown to FULL SIZE not the tiny juvies you see paired up with males.
I had a petsmart flowerhorn that was healthy and beautiful a few years back, took about 15 months to grow from 3" to over 12" TL. He didnt have the color you see from some of the "designer" flowerhorns, but he had a robust yet svelte form and his exuberant personality left a mark on me, wish i never had sold him.
I think a lot of the negativity we're reading here regarding flowerhorns is unfounded and stems from bad experiences with improperly kept, poorly bred fish. I do know shortbody variants are rather notorious for health problems, but thats true for almost all shortbody fish.
I will add that in almost all of the accounts i hear of flowerhorn developing gastrointestinal issues, it is also revealed that the fish were fed very heavily with high protein or "color-enhancing" foods that are poor choices as staple foods for fish whose parent breeds have a primarily herbivorous diet in the wild.
Flowerhorns can be just as hardy, impressive, and fun as any other "pure" CA cichlid. They just need the proper care imo.
My p. multifasciatus:
Serranochromis robustus:
Champsochromis caeruleus:
Buccochromis atritaeniatus:
Tyrannochromis macrostoma:
And my favorite video of haitiensis:
All of these hit within the 12-18" range. They are all fast, visually pleasing, and aggressive feeders.
For a 180 I would suggest a jag cichlid. If raised from small you might be able to get a pair out of them if you purchase a group.
Ultimately you will end up with a pair or just one. Very personable fish and I think they look nice.
