Gutsy Mix, Can it be Done? 2.0

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay, I checked out the gold one, I think the red wolf fish is prettier and less risky. I also got your note on the ornate and variations on Senegal bichirs. I'm slightly saddened I can't have an ornate as they are honestly some of the most attractive bichirs, but I'd rather not push it. I didn't know that platinum fish tend to have bad genes and stuff. I currently have a platinum parrot fish and he hasn't had problems, but if there is a big risk with platinums and other variations I won't risk it further than I already have.
Platinum parrot is a short-bodied white convict cichlid. It’s less hardy than a true convict, but convicts are so incredibly hardy that they don’t seem to care about being impaired.

Convicts are definitely hardy, and those genes are pretty obvious in my platinum as my platinum was one of a few fish that survived one of my worst mistakes with my tank, and it was even brand new at the time, therefore it hadn't had many days to truly acclimate into its new environment.

The other fish that survived were my black ghost knife, my striped Raphael cat, my two flying foxes, my Zamora wood and pictus catfish, and my angel. Most of which were new. At the time I also had a Green Phantom pleco and a Polar convict parrot (the one that looks more like a convict, it was also new), but they both passed away. I was devastated after losing my green phantom because 1. it was my most expensive fish (around $80), 2. It was one of my first fish, and 3. it was an impressive fish and the best friend of my Striped Raphael (they always were together in the corner or in various other nook and cranny hiding places in the tank).

Does anyone recommend any plecos for a 55-gallon? I know there are a lot of options but they're may be some more that I missed. I thought I was never going to get a pleco again (mostly because after my green phantom my tank was significantly cleaner lol), but I'm considering the prospect again.

Everything I’ve mentioned will take to pellets or frozen readily. The butterfly is the only exception - I haven’t found if they require live crickets or if that’s just a treat. I’m sure it could be trained.
My wolf and del took to pellets on day 1.
I had several butterflies and they ate anything and absolutely smashed pellets

I had a raphael once i loved also, but I rarely reccomend them because I only saw him once a month or so, very reclusive and nocturnal, just added bioload without adding enjoyment

I'm just saying, you should be very careful what you say next about Raphs... LOL. I'm kidding (though I seriously love them).

But in all seriousness, I have to agree to a certain degree since my Raphael hides out a lot. But, it ultimately depends on your tank setup, if you have more than one catfish, and it is sparsely decorated, you will see your Raph a lot more. But if you heavily decorate it with plenty of hiding spots and it is the only catfish in the tank, you'll never see him again lol.

Mine has a favorite log that I’d be sure he’s stuck in if he didn’t come out every once in a while. The worst part is he taunts my by always sticking either his tail or face out. I doubt I’m helping by constantly feeding him just outside it.
I’ve had the fish for 3 years and seen it outside of there probably less than 10 times.

That's the reason I don't provide a specific hiding place for it LOL, though I have to say it has a special ability to find the most minuscule hiding places that I didn't even know existed in the tank.
