You are half right, they are a form of clean up crew but they are not flea sized.
I forgot to finish my comment before posting it, multi tasking is not my strong suit. Copepods are likely what you’re thinking of as the aquatic isopods I’m familiar with get to dime size.
They're typically called "isopods" because the previous common name..."scuds"...just sounds so crappy...
Who would buy scuds? Nobody. But re-branding them with the more accurate and more scientific-sounding moniker "isopods" opens the door for somebody to market and sell them.
Anybody notice the on-line retailers selling "terrestrial isopods"? Does anybody think they would sell any if they called them by the old name "woodlice"?

We used that only for the type that could roll up into a sphere. The rest were just woodlice or the equally unappealing "sow bugs".
