Con Solo the Convict

Right at the 2 week old mark for the fry. They’re eating and definitely are slowly growing, but don’t have that actual fish shape yet. I’ll try to get another video by tonight.

Here’s my concern at the moment, it looks like their numbers have been dwindling these past few days. Not sure if they’re picking each other off as they grow. I hope Leia’s not eating them, and I haven’t witnessed her eat them. Doesn’t necessarily mean that isn’t happening when I’m not looking. At what point will she no longer care for the fry?

I’d expect parental care at least until they start to look like fish and can take care of themselves. I’m not too surprised some started to disappear - they lay so many eggs for a reason.

LOL! I found at least two convict fry still roaming around the 75 today during my w/c. The chances of me getting them would be essentially zero. That would literally be like finding a needle in a hay stack. I wonder how long they’ll make it there, they’ve managed to survive more than 2 weeks now.

A bit of an unfortunate update. I think that Leia is indeed eating fry. There's almost none left and she’s not even bothering with the ones that remain. She’s back to begging for food too, rather than tending to fry. I've heard it could take one or two spawns for them to really get the hang of things. I can’t imagine my hectic transferring of all the fry as well as Leia into the 29 again could've helped either.

I’m going to continue to bulk her up for the time being. Hopefully things go smoother next time around. I plan on just leaving the pair to their fry in the 75. They seemed to be doing best as a pair. I’d much rather temporarily move the swordtails if need be, then risk another faulty spawn.

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve updated. End of the fall semester stuff and things: finals, essays, etc. All I’ve really been doing with the tanks as of late is making sure I get done my usual water changes.
It didn’t take long for Leia to go back to her usual colors after all the fry was gone. And 100% back to her former self. Greedy as ever and more recently a finger nipper during feeding time lol. IMG_3157.jpegI’m gearing up to get the her back in the 75 again soon. I should have much more time to monitor them, now that winter break is here. Like I mentioned previously I don’t plan on pulling fry next time.
And Solo:

I like to think he’s been appreciating the few weeks of peace, away from the pint sized nutcase that was his mate 😆.

I’d like some opinions on something. Noticed for the past several days an odd white “growth” I guess you can say on the tip of Solo’s ventral fin. It hasn’t been worsening at all, but it’s just kind of remained like this for several days. I’ve been assuming he just injured his ventral fin somehow and any new growth didn’t come back in properly? I’d really appreciate second opinions. IMG_3205.jpegIMG_3210.jpeg
