Unless I'm mistaken, there aren't any species of pleco, cory, or other catfish native to Central America that is available in the hobby. So what (if any) species of bottom feeding fish do you house with your Central American cichlids? If you choose to answer can you also mention what type of cichlid you have?

Chaetostoma fischeri (Rubber lip plecos) is quire common in Panama in the east, and there are a few other Plecos endemic here.

I caught the ones above and below in central and eastern Panama.

Sturisomatichthys (whip tail cat) are found on both northern and southern sides of the Cordillera Centrale mountain range.

And I've been successful using Awaous banana Goby's with with not "too" predatory cichlids such as Andimoacara.
They are native fro northern S America, thru Panamaand the west Indies, as far north as the southern US on both coasts.

And of course Pimelodus cat like P chagresi, and guatemalensis.

I love fried fish, it's one of those wonderful "comfort foods" of my youth. While on a northern fishing trip, a shore lunch of fried fish'n'potatoes with canned beans is a highlight.

Having said that...those are some of the nastiest-looking fillets I have ever seen. When it comes to food, I'll try anything...once...but looking at that bowl of fillets before they were breaded did not make me think "Wow! I can't wait to try those!" :yuck:

I use bristlenose plecos and raphael cats for mine. Not geographically correct but the substitute well for the proper natives. I also have a kribensis pair in my tank that does a lot of sand sifting.

As stated already by Duanes, there are several species of plecostomus that can be found in Panama.
There is a variant of the Bristlenose pleco commonly called the "Panama red", basically a BN with a nice reddish color. I kept one years back and they are the same as normal BN places in all other regards.
There are also many other catfish that can be found in Central America, such as the "cenote catfish" rhamdia species, but these are not commonly available in the hobby.

I had a pair of panama red bn years ago, they were awesome, always out and about and did a number on spot algae on the glass, fantastic little fish. I havent seen them in the last 5 years though, I would love to get some again. Are they actually panamanian? I assumed it was a line bred color variant like the albinos etc, and the "panama Red" was just a merchandising name
