  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, for sure a bittersweet journey for that little fella. On the plus side, he managed to survive the road trip!

I am no birdwatcher but these new fellows showed up in my yard today.
I’ve never seen them before.

I couldn’t get close enough for good photos before he flew.

Dark-eyed Junco, widespread throughout North America, numerous colour variations, very common in fall and spring migration hereabouts. I expect to start seeing them in the yard here any day now. Not sure how common or uncommon it is in your neck of the woods, but the range maps show that it is a year-round resident in much of California.

TLDR: basically just another sparrow. :)

Visiting my folks in Australia. These guys are common here, but thought I share with you birdies. This group live in my parents yard on Nth Stradbroke Island in Qld. They’re the “road runners” of down under. Meet the Australian Bush stone-curlew 🤗

Had trouble loading pics. Here’s another of the pair…

I love it! Always great to see some species that is just a daily run-of-the-mill occurrence in some far-flung region of the globe, but which I am unlikely to ever come across in my life.

That's one of the wonderful things about birding, IMHO: it's an extra layer of interest that can be tacked onto just about any trip anywhere in the world, and can be pursued with as much or as little effort as one wishes to expend.

Do these Stone-Curlews follow the common theme so prevalent among Ossie wildlife? I mean...biggest, meanest, fastest, most venomous, kill-an-adult-human-in-seconds type of stuff? 😲

The one standing up in your last pic looks like he isn't gonna take any guff from anybody...:)
