Hey everyone,
i find that when i am doing research on these two animals I keep comming back to the same problem. I hear lots of people claim to have P. perruno, but when I see pics I am left with doubt. the problem is all the text I read says that L. marmoratus has 10-13 dorsal fin rays and P. perruno only has 8. I think there must be something wrong with someone's research or I have never seen an actual pic of P. perruno. The reason I say this is because I have spent countless hours counting dorsal fin rays on these fish, and they all come out to 13 rays. There's 1 hard dorsal fin ray and 12 soft dorsal fin rays on all of the pics i have seen for both of these fish. I even have a skeleton of a supposed P. perruno, but it also has 13 rays. So as you can see i am getting a migrain trying to figure this out. I have also read that there is a difference in the placement of the mental barbells, but also find no difference in the pics. What do you guys think? Has anyone every kept a proof positive P. perruno? If so provide me with pics so that i can come to a real conclusion about this fish. I am starting to think that they are really the same species and just subspecies of Leiarus marmoratus. Oh and was L. marmoratus officially changed to L. longbarbus? I just wanna know the answer for certain even the pics in all the books i have the dorsal fin ray count is the same, and the mental barbell placement is the same! HELP!!!

Yours has 13 I beleive. I never could ID them either. I heard perruno have no spots on their head(the patterning is less visable) . But I dont know if that is correct. I dont know why, I also used to always think marms had bigger blotches while perrino had smaller ones but again i have no clue.

Sorry that was no help.

thanks wayne, but planetcatfish only adds to that confusion, hmm, the info on the name change never really caught my eye till now lol. I count 13 on those pics also, but it's hard to see the seperations of the rays. i have heard many different ways people try to tell them apart, but yet according to everything I have heard that only leads me to think i have never actually seen a perruno. Seems this guy in NC had one he claimed was perruno and it was not as dark as the leiarius species i have seen. It was more a lighter green, but that was before i was interested in all this confusion. Also the fish was big, but seemed more slendered bodied than longibarbus, but that was years ago, and I have not seen another like it yet. It may have just been a freak for all I know. Even the books I look in all have pics of supposed perruno with 13 fin rays. hmmmm, the world may never know! lol

post pics here and prove it's a perruno, and also I think the mods would tell you that if you have a fish for sale to post it in the buy and sell forum! I would love to get it if you can post pics and prove that it is %100 a perruno and not longbarbus/ marmoratus.
