other than shutting down the waterfall and filter and installing an air stone, is there anything else i need to do before the pond freezes over? I live in Long Island.

I never experienced my pond freezing, but I think you can cover it to help.

DO NOT leave the pump running to power your waterfall or other feature.
DO NOT use oxygenated water in the winter months
Use a defence system like thermostatically controlled pond deicer

Clean any debris from the bottom of the pond before winter. No need for a deicer, an air stone near the surface works just fine. On extremely cold days, just check to make sure a hole remains open in the ice.

When I used to have one I used to cover it up with planks, and tarps. It really depends on how big it is though..

I cover my pond with 4" thick kingspan insulation boards. It has not frozen in 12 years. I live in Wales U.K. so it does freeze here.
