I was told that the lighter one was a female but how can u tell the difference

Top one is definitely male. Spotting down the body, no "blue beard" on lower jaw.

They can both go from dark to light depending on mood. I'm guessing the darker one is more dominant atm.

Yeah the lower one looks male to me from this pic. Due to the body shape and the lack of strong blue coloration on the gill plate.
