I would say no tankmates in a 90, these guys can get huge as stated before. 125 would be better, 90 should be do-able though as a solo wetpet. Maybe some giant danios or a bristlenose pleco. Very cool fish

I wouldn't keep one in any thing under a 220.
I have a 90 gallon tank and the idea if a 10 inch long fish in that to me would be to cramped.
I would look at fish that hit a maximum of 8 inches for a 90.

I've never owned a large one ive seen a 16"+ one before and there's no way I'd put it in a 90 for long. A 90 would be a good grow out for a while but I think a 180 for a male or a pair would be more ideal.

Seems as though we have similar discussions to this one a lot. It also seems that it's hard for people to understand what it's like keeping a fish in a "minimum" size tank to adulthood. My Oscar came to me at 5" and went into a 75. He's now pushing 12" and the tank looks like a Betta bowl. I'll post some pics for effect when I get off work. I have to agree with stanzz that anything over 8" is gonna look really cramped. Another seldom considered aspect is the waste. It's really difficult to physically turn the water volume over enough times p/hr to keep the conditions acceptable. I run an fx5 with all biomedia and 2 125gph sponges on an alita40(I think) and I do water changes 2-3 per week of no less than 50%. I have 3 large house plants with their roots in the tank to further alleviate nitrate creep. It doesn't work. 2-3 days and I'm pushing 40-80ppm nitrates.

How much do you feed? That's pretty surprising, I had a 11" ish Oscar with a couple 8" severums, a convict, and a 6" jack Dempsey for years in a 90 running just one of the old eheim classics (2217 I think? one of the bigger ones) and doing once a week 40% changes, and my nitrates very rarely crept above 40ppm

I consider oscars as a fairly lazy species, compared to Vieja maculacauda.
I also find oscars pussy cats compared to the aggression of any Vieja.
So trying to equate similar living conditions is a bit off the mark.
But I also believe keeping an adult oscar in a 90 is cruel and unusual punishment.
I suppose you could jail one in a 90, but that's kind of like keeping a St Bernard in an average bathroom, 24/7.

Was merely trying to paint a picture about how fast waste can accumulate. I agree with everything you said Duane's. It's apples and oranges 100%

I feed 1/4 teaspoon of NLS 3mm sinking pellets once a day and skip a couple days a week
