You can use a ball valve but it's a lot harder to make the fine adjustments to the water flow

That's good advice with gate valve - you will like that much better than a ball valve for primary siphon drain. That applies to both BA or Herbie as well.

With regards to sump and size; folks typically want as large as possible to increase overall water volume and/or for equipment. IMO, 55 gallons and sufficient for all those things and room for mechanical, biological filtration and equipment for a 225 gallons.

Here is my setup for my 220. Full siphon and completely silent. I use a 55 for my sump and run about 1600gph through it. If you can use a 75 or 90, go for it. I wish I held out for at least a 75, but my 55 does work really well.
