Canister or HOB

I recently purchased a 225 gal tank to house my male Jaguar cichlid. All my other tanks have either sump or HOB filters. I've never messed with canister filters so I was thinking of going with 3 AquaClear 110s since he will be the only fish for that tank. Would this be a sufficient filtration setup for him ?

I would do 2 hob for mechanical and a canister for bio

HOB if you are trying to cut cost. I have two ac110 on my 100g and it's working out great. I recommend fx6 if you use canisters

I have 3 Aquaclear 110s on my 220 and 2 canisters. With only the 3 Aquaclears running it just doesn't seem enough to me. Now granted you'll only have one fish so I'm not sure.

Could also look into HMF filters from Swiss Tropicals. If you go the 2 hob + can, get the https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00M...+sun+304+b&dpPl=1&dpID=41czsOo6BVL&ref=plSrch Much cheaper than the other 2 big cans.

2 hobs and a high capacity canister for bio would be the best way IMO.

I run 3 ac110s on my 180g. Had a solitary rhom and then solitary Aimara. For one fish that isn't huge it's fine. I always had HOB and then went with a fx5 and hated it. Looked better and quieter but much harder to clean. I never had a problem with ammonia and the way I did it actually held more bio than the fx5 plus more turnover.

You can also get better quality media like cermedia if you want. What it will come down to is how easy do you want maintenance to be.

To me, canisters are a pain in the arse to clean, so consequently they seldom are, and so become nitrate factories.
HOBs are simple, so for the cost of one user unfriendly canister you could probably line the back with half dozen HOBs, rinse the media on one every couple days within a time span of about 5 minutes, sit back and relax, and enjoy.
