I'd return them if the lfs gave you the impression that you could keep them in a 75 for 3 years or even or year. Get something that'll be easy to care for in a 75.

Consider the size and number of water changes that will be needed for a fish the size of just one adult 12" oscar in a 75. I have one and 75% weekly water changes are needed to keep nitrate under control.

Smaller fish like JDs or GTs, firemouths, are better for your first tank larger than 29 gal. It just depends on how much work you're willing to put into the tank.

i think an intex pool is really your only affordable option, unless you have $$$$ at your disposal. But even a pool is going to cost hundreds to get up and running probably.

As a side note, don't trust what anyone at pet/fish stores tell you;) They are I. The business of making a profit, not keeping fish properly.

Rainbow fish are nice but take time to develop

What interests you? Central/South American cichlids, Africans, oddballs, active community? There's lots of fish that will fit well in a 75. If you want multiple fish you'll want to keep under 6-7"' for a solo or pair 10"

For a start, I would get 6-10 young Salvini and let them work it out till you have a pair. Add in about 10 of w/e variety swordtail or 6 mollies. Some rock/wood and anubias or floating plants like Frogbit. If you like there's a blue hoplo that you could add about 5 of.

It's important that you begin cycling now so whatever fish you end up getting won't have to endure weeks of toxic ammonia and nitrite.

I'd recommend completing a fishless cycle before getting any fish.
