I have kept many, and had a breeding pair for about 5 years. The males get @ 15", females 1/3 smaller.
They need temps in the upper 80s, and don't do well with any tanks mates, my pair ruled a 150 gal tank.
In Haiti and the Dominican Republic they are the only endemic cichlid, probably why they don''t play well with others.

Last I saw, they were available from COA in Florida, and Wet Spot on the west coast.

You will almost never see haitiensus in local fish stores, unless they specialize in rare cichlids.
Even as youngsters, they will kill each other in the confines of a normal size tank, and the temps needed to keep healthy, are higher than most LFSs are willing to provide.
In too low of water temps, they seem to not be able to process protein, so they die of bloat.
And if they are put into a community, if they can't kill everything else in the tank, they die themselves from stress when young.
Before I ended up with my pair, I killed 19 of 20 before figuring out how to properly keep them.

Oh wow . I appreciate the info I been wanting to get 1 but it’s seems impossible in my area. I never ordered a fish online I kinda have some doubts to it. Right now I have dovii in a 55 gallon he’s only 5 inches I’m going to move in a bigger tank soon. I just wanted to get a black nasty as well to grow him out but keep separate.

Ordering on line is possibly the only was to get certain species, unless there are breeders in your area.
If you are close to a Hub you can get airport to airport delivery in only a few hours.
Or you can get 24 hour overnight delivery, in just about any reasonable sized city.
I have received fish both ways, from cichlid specialists like COA, Jeff Rapps, Dave's Rare Ciclids, and Wet Spot. And had great experiences with all.
I will always pay the extra few bucks for 24 hour (or less) if available.

Haitiensus are the only cichlid endemic to the island of Hispaniola.
I find whether a cichlid has a tolerance for other tank mates usually has a basis in how it evolved in nature.
In South America, where many different species of cichlids are found together there is a innate tolerance, but in places like islands, or isolated desert areas where there may only be one species, or one of a genus to a body of water the tolerance of other tank mates is very low. Nandopsis tetrcanthus is another species from a area where it dominates, and does not often play well with others. Herichthys minckleyi from an isolated area in the Mexican desert is another that comes to mind.
I find Central American cichlids because of more isolated natural habitats are (beanii is another in that crew) less apt to do well with other species. Some are very aggressive or just do poorly, and sicken or don't show best colors, when put in communities. A little research on what lives together in what area, will help determine these factors before one tarts to put things together randomly.

I was also very tempted with these, saw some on eBay at one point but never got them. Theres a guy on Youtube with a breeding pair. He keeps alot of cichlids, may have even posted above. Think he's based in the Uk thought. Good luck with your search! It will be worth it in the end! If you get a pair, maybe you could start introducing them into the hobby yourself (Just a suggested project for you)
