Does Anyone else do this?

Hey everyone, So I have been doing this for a while now and was wondering if anyone else does anything like this to a spare HOB filter they might have laying around. I run an Aquaclear 110 as the main source of filtration on my 55 gallon but I also have this spare whisper 60. I thought this would be a good idea for extra Biological and mechanical filtration along with a sponge filter inside the tank. Has anyone else done this or does anyone else have custom sump type things they do with there HOB?

I like that idea.
I don’t stick to buying media meant for my filters. I always use random rolls I get from amazon for my pond. Spare pieces get cut to size for the tanks filters.

Have you tried smaller lava rocks? It is more porous so it will hold more bacteria to break down?

I've got to AC110s on my 75 now, dont have one for straight biological. But I did do it on my old 55 when I had my AC110 for main filtration and a Penguin 350 for bio.

I have a marine land 250 hot magnum running with boiballs then the return goes in to my uv sterilizer.
