Odd question- how long do hemp, cotton and/or silk lines (thread?) last underwater, holding tension? Theoretically salt-water, but whatever experience is useful.
Hello; I guess you have a reason for asking so if some sort of line is needed I suggest checking into the sort of line used around boats.
Of the three you have listed my thinking is that cotton will hold up more poorly than the others. I bought some white cotton line to mark the edge of a driveway project. The line was out in the weather and started to fall apart in less that a year.
On the other hand I have some lines on my boat that are decades old (one + anyway) and are still strong. The problem is I do not recall what they are made of. Some sort of synthetic material likely a polymer because I think I have burned the ends to prevent unraveling.
Why dont you use monofilament fishing line, typically made of nylon. The bonus with this is that you can buy it in different breaking strains depending on the load that it's supporting.
