So I went to my local lfs about a week ago and they had a laulao catfish that was like 2" or so for 100$ though I was talking with them over there and they said I could take it for 85$. I ended up not taking it as I didn't want to spend that much on a fish out of the blue so I decided to give it a couple weeks to sit and see if it was meant to be. I forgot to take pictures but I'm pretty sure its a vaillantii and so I was wondering if anyone around here has any experience keeping them or if you know any care tips as I've been looking but couldn't find much.

Biggest cat in the Amazon up to 9ft long, I think the initial purchase is the least of your worries if you intend to get it:)

On the Rio Araguaia, I wish...

Yes Lau Lau is what they call them in Suriname. It's Brachyplatystoma Capapretum or Brachyplatystoma Filamentosum, and at that price likely the former. "Slower" growing monster SA catfish species maxing out well above any normal private aquariums size capacity.

It appears to me that this name is applied to piraiba rather rarely in our trade. Mostly, it is indeed used for the vaillantii.

Piraiba is called a lot of names:

http://www.fishbase.org/ComNames/Co...stoma&SpeciesName=filamentosum&StockCode=6741

Capapretum doesn't have common names listed http://www.fishbase.org/summary/62217 probably because of the recent split from filamentosum. IDK.

That's why using common names should be minimized.

In any case, we may not know what fish we are talking about. Vaillantii are kept by a few members, myself included and they are rare, very rare and more expensive I'd think. Other keepers come to mind are Garniac and Vincent Wu.

Indeed, very few locals distinguish between B. filamentosum and B. capapretum.

Yeah I'm not the best fish identifier but the fish was looking a good bit like the one here https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/catfish-id-needed-please.692432/#post-7805218
