I just opened the pond back up this weekend. I’m so happy to see my babies again! They all made it through their first winter. I was pretty worried after I took the tarp off too soon and the top froze over during a storm.
The water is really dark right now. I’m hoping it will clear back up in a few weeks now that the filter is up and running.

And these are the growouts I had inside all winter. I got them at 3-4in
I just added them to the pond yesterday.

Yes, it has been so wonderful having sunshine and warm weather. Finally 60-70 in our forecast for the next couple weeks. No more snow! Haha
I’m sure they are happy to have the tarp off. The water has warmed up a lot over the past week. I just need to wait a little longer before adding my last two fancies to the pond.

I’m not worried about them out competing my koi. If anything I think my koi would starve anything else. Lol They are very greedy eaters.
Beating up my fish is my worry. For more aggressive natives anyway. Lack of top color is another reason I’m not motivated to add them.

And I’d be happy to post more pictures of the koi.
Here is the blue one, Draco. View attachment 1311832
These are pictures of the herd from last year.

And my two ryukins. I was taking pictures for a show held over the winter. They took first and second place:) View attachment 1311835View attachment 1311836
Nice fancies! Didn't know you had such nice ones.

As far as pretty dorsal color on natives there aren't a lot unless you like:albino channel catfish, xanthic sunfish etc.

Thank you. I’m adding two more fancies once I add a smaller pond to empty into the main pond.

I had thought about an albino cat, but I’d have to wait till all my koi are big enough to not be food.
I was going to put my two plecos out there, but they are such a pain to catch.

Use a homemade fish trap or a seine net to catch plecos, catching fish doesn't have to be a cardio workout thankfully.

I took some pictures of the fish eating this morning. The water is still really dark, just waiting on a new uv bulb to arrive. I planted some pothos in the rocks around the pond. Hopefully I have them up enough to keep the koi from shredding them. I had arrow head plants in there last year and they didn’t even last a week.

I finally have a buyer for the fish I want to let go of. So today I drained the pond down and separated them from the herd.
First couple pictures are the shubunkins. Both are about 10”

Next is a small 8” koi I call Rosie. EF091AB4-7FDC-4A9E-B90E-A2BBEE78DA98.jpeg
Last is a 13” koi affectionately named garbage.

My husband and I are trying to make room so we can possibly add a new koi or two this year.

And since I was netting and measuring I thought I’d take out a a few others to see how big they are. I only got two, the others were way to jumpy and I didn’t want to stress them out anymore then I already did.
First are some pictures of my favorite koi, Sunshine.

And Olaf. One of my big trio.
