My male 2 yr angel has red growth at base of one pec fin. Acting normal, ie swimming, eating, chasing girlfriends (3 other angels in tank, all females). Water parameters all good (7.5/0/0/30 pH/amm/nitrite/nitrate). 75 gal. Tank is 2 years old. Noticed it 2 days ago. Only thing different is some professionals cleaned it 5 days ago because I threw my back out. Any ideas would be appreciated. Will try and post pic.

Sorry for the late reply. Seen this before several times on angelfish. Some resolved w/o adding anything and others went to full septicemia.

Would suggest keeping the nitrates down. Dabbing the area with a little iodine and keep some furan2 or maracyn2 on hand. In case it gets worse. Add a little salt at a 1tsp per gallon (one time) for now. Monitor and update.

If end up treating then move to another tank as the meds will kill ur B.B.

Thank you so much. The tank is heavily planted, will the salt hurt the plants? I don’t have a sick tank but I’ve been thinking of setting one up, it would take some time but if he hangs in there until it’s ready (although needless to say I hope he just recovers) it would be an option. I will do a 50% water change too. Here’s the tank a few months ago to show the plants.

Salt will kill plants. Then keep the water pristine and dab the affected area with iodine ona qtip and return to the tank.

Update: it’s been a week. The red growth (which looks fuzzy up close) is the same. He is still swimming and eating but he seems a little sluggish. I noticed a couple scales missing along his back and at his throat yesterday. This morning he had a white poop (see pic). I rarely see him (or any of my fish) pooping at all so that is not normal. Also last week one of his girlfriends laid eggs (one of them does that every month or so) and instead of fertilizing then and then hanging around and tending to them with mom for a couple days he ate then as she was laying them.

So far I did a couple water changes. Nitrates are down to less than 10ppm. I also treated two days with amoxicillin — Saturday and Sunday, then did 50% water change yesterday — as I was concerned about the whole tank and the guy at the fish store said that wouldn’t hurt them. I was concerned because on the same day, about 5 days ago, a hole appeared in the fin of my pleco and then the distal part fell off, and the mouth of one of my cardinals got stuck open and his abdomen became sucked in. The pleco seems fine (see pic), and even the cardinal is swimming around normally, even though he looks odd. I even say him eat, he just sucked a piece of food in.

I’m thinking the professionals introduced something into the tank? They did a good job, just always risky to have someone else do things.... Or maybe not.... At least I’m set up so I can change the water myself again (I can hook the hose to the shower so don’t have to carry buckets.)

In any case I’m thinking I should go ahead and set up a hospital tank and treat him there? With Maracyn?

Thanks again for the advice so far.

Adding a pic from yesterday morning. It shows the red fuzzy growth. And his scales are fine. The damage to them happened yesterday during the day. You can see a few gold ones in his head are missing in rhe first pic I uploaded today.

Can move the angelfish and try the maracyn2.

Thanks; as it's been a week, I take it I should go ahead and do this , as it doesn't seem likely that he's going to recover? Seems better to start now while he's eating? Also, I've read that I can set up a 10 gal hospital tank by taking 10 gal of my tank's water, and some of the sand, and a little bit of the biological media, adding a filter and bubbler, and put him in it? I didn't add iodine, I was nervous about taking him out, should I do that now?
