I took some koi out while doing a water change on the pond.
This one was added last fall at 3” and was almost all white as you can see from the picture on the top right.

And lastly Olaf. She has been a disappointment this year. Her black faded and she got badly sunburned. Now she’s nearly clear of the sunburn, but her black has not returned yet:( the top picture is now and bottom is from earlier this year. View attachment 1333716
I like how in japans soft water causes the fish to be white, while most water in the u.s brings out the nice yellow color in koi

I kinda wish my water was softer for the koi. I’d love a beautiful white skinned koi. But I’d need a mud pond and softer water to achieve that.

This week has been tough. Monday I lost my first pond fish to a medical issue.
I’m thinking it may have been from a koi hitting her and damaging her swim bladder beyond what it could heal from. It happened so fast and nothing I did helped even a little.
To make it even worse, she is my sons fish. So he has been devastated over the loss as well.

Temps are finally rising here in the north! But I’m getting so very nervous. The pond did not do great at all this year:( I was so confident in the beginning but this winter is the worse winter we’ve had in the 5yrs I’ve been here. It was a record breaker winter in many ways. -60F and major snow fall.
The pond got completely covered and I’m afraid iced over completely. I was battling the ice for a couple months and now its been under three feet of snow for over a month and I’ve been so busy trying to keep up with weekly snow storms that I haven’t had time or energy to address the pond.

This week is going to hit 50 so I’m going to be working on getting what snow is left off the pond. As afraid as I am about having a total fish loss I need to know one way or another if anyone made it. I’ve been so sick over this.

I’ll report back here one way or another. Hopefully it will be to continue my ponds progression and progress, and not to end a chapter in my pond keeping journal.
