i know this is probably a basic question but I am fairly new to live plants. What is the stalk growing out of my sword? I thought swords propagated by runners. Is this actually a runner?
Thanks in advance.

Yes. The plants are fairly new to my tank. But each does have a root tab at its base. I wish that the stalk was indicative of my plant expertise but it came with the stalk already fairly well developed.
Ultimately I am trying to give the fish a bit more cover and hopefully get them to be more active in all levels of the tank.

Oh ok. A root tab will definitely help get it growing.

That stalk is the runner. Sonner or later it will start growing a starter plant on it.1526017147737963431697.jpg
You can see a couple here in this pick. 20180519_113410.jpg
In this one you can see the leaves growing out, almost ready to be cut off and planted seperatly.

There are different sp. Of Amazon sword plants so may be slight differences. With that said mine would send out them stalks. Then a bunch of "flowers" would sprout.20181214_105737.jpg
Then a few days later leaves would start to grow out of the same spots that had the flowers. I waited till about six leaves or so and a couple long roots. 20181214_105847.jpg
See the one on the right has a third leaf growing in and first root going down.
