Yep or like Jim said could be dirty spotting....This is just down to the quality of the ray. They are known as 'dirty' spots.
As far as I know its in the genes/bloodline of the ray and nothing to do with things such as water quality. Diet 'may' play a part?

Thanks - it’s possible an exuberant male harassing her could be responsibleSometimes if the area is scraped up they will heal that wa as well. I have rays that had a pure white spot that was bit and it healed back broken up a bit like that. Shouldn’t be a health issue though.
