added 1 tbs per 5 gal. You can convert to full within a few water changes. 1 tbs is hardly noticeable to every bucket of water anyways.
but I've always added a little salt to all my freshwater to buffer it.

Table salt won't buffer, so I assume you add a tablespoon of marine salt, right? It sounds Wesley Wong of Rare Fish does about the same, calls it light brackish.
