Dwarf Giraffe Cat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dwarf giraffe cats is sort of catch all name for smaller members of the Genus in my opinion. I've got one now in my 125. 5-6 inch currently, and was 2 or so when I got him roughly nine months ago He is pretty secretive and is mainly nocturnal. HIs tank mates include a bunch of Geophagus alto sinu, some Rafael cats, plecos and tetras. Eats pelleted food of all types.

Ok cool I wanted a cat for my 125 and i figured that might be the best one

From my limited knowledge on the giraffe catfish group I believe that Notoglanidium macrostoma is the most common dwarf giraffe catfish and you’re unlikely to randomly stumble upon another dwarf giraffe catfish. The wetspot has them in stock currently.

Don’t expect anything like as personable fish with a dwarf giraffe as you get with the larger ones. The dwarf giraffe is quite a secretive fish that hides quite a lot. Think more striped Dora than than red tail cat when it comes to being out and about on show and interacting with the owner.

May also come across the parauchenoglanis family on occasion although these are much more a half way version, less dwarf (12” ish) and less secretive.

Yellowcat Yellowcat (just an FYI, Kirk)

Thanks Viktor, yeah saw this yesterday but didn't respond as others have responded with correct information and advice. I have 3 of 'em going on 5 months now. I got mine from Aqua Imports, at the time they were advertised as a parauchenoglanis species but after ordering I requested a photo and determined they were notoglanidium macrostoma but decided to get them anyway. They arrived at around 2 1/2" and since have grown about an inch. Maximum size is said to be around 7". They will eat the usual flakes and pellets, are very shy and nocturnal and if given driftwood hiding places they prefer, you won't see them at all during daylight hours. They are a peaceful species and get along with their own kind and other cat species, in my case an anadoras grypus and 2 rhinodoras dorbigny, I never see them either, of course. I can also recommend wetspottropicalfish.com as I've gotten several kinds of cats from them. There are several species of notoglanidium but have never seen any other than macrostoma available. With parauchenoglanis there are several species as well that range from 6" specimens to 18" one's. In auchenoglanis species, many will grow to 2 or 3' long with the exception of a. biscutatus (have 3) that stay under a foot long, so far...
