Depends what kind of fishing you're doing:
If you'll be float fishing roe, beads, jigs, etc. hard to beat a Fenwick HMX baitcasting rod. Get the medium heavy 9 or 10ft. For a reel, I like the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C4 5600. Kind of an expensive combo, but rod and reel are both built to last, and I've caught a lot of fish on them. Big salmon can be hard on gear, and a low profile bass reel might not be up to the task, but I've used them in slow current waters.
If you plan on casting and retrieving lures, I'm using a BPS Tourney Special spinning rod;, also medium heavy. This is only a 7ft rod and is great for twitching jigs. I also use it for spinners and spoons. I like a bit of a longer rod for spinners and spoons (7'6" or 8'), but I don't want to take 3 rods. Reel is a Daiwa Regal LT spinning reel.
If you're looking for some cheaper options, lots of 9-10ft floating rods out there as well as 7-8ft spinning rods for lures. Just make sure the power is MEDIUM HEAVY. It sucks when you fighting a fish and your rod snaps.
EDIT:
I'll also add - braided line is king. I use 30-50lb on float setups and 20-30lb on my spinning setups. 15lb fluorocarbon or copolymer leader is good in most scenarios. Sometimes I'll bump it up to 20lb, sometimes down to 12lb depending on what I'm fishing.
