Rethinking standard practice: 8 years, no testing, no disease.

The fact that you’ve repeatedly played the poor, single dad card multiple times says differently…
You're the type of person who is going to go through them videos with a fine tooth comb and nit pick everything I did and say it's wrong (no dechlorinator in the tank, no testing of the water or that my tank will fail) I can already tell you are that type of person 
and to clarify I never once played the poor card, I said I am a single parent and my money priorities lie else where, this tank is designed this way with purpose, and you drew your own conclusions from that
I did the water change to prove a point and you fell straight into it. I'll post a update in a week's time of the stability of my tank , until then I'm done with this thread

Thanks for being someone who is actually interested in my observation of this tank and not just looking for a fight or another way to demoralise someone while hiding behind a keyboard.
And just to demonstrate even with a water change the tank still looks the same colour it did with out.

Hello; Some on this site are indeed experts in some areas. Others like me have been at the hobby for a long time and learned from making mistakes. A thing is like it or no the community on here has knowledge plus experience. But I can accept being a part of gatekeeping. At some point some newby might become disgusted with the chore of doing regular & timely WC and seek a way out of such. Your posts make such sound plausible. I do not buy into your methods without some evidence. Your claim is the water is good with 90 day WC, a filter never cleaned in 8 years and all. A simple set of water parameter test results would go a long way to satisfy the claims you make.
The claim of good water without evidence to back such up is a main point. My bet so far is the water will be very high in nitrates. The tank water will be some different in pH from your tap water. I would expect the mineral levels to be very high.
Again some fish shops will do a test on your water. might be worth a try.
Hello; I am one you claim to have made a personal attack. In a way such is correct. You made erroneous use of the term's hypothesis & observation in a post. I pointed such out along with an explanation why it is important we all use a common framework of language. The personal interactions devolved after that.
Hello; A setup like yours is working to your standards. My example of tank being run with only a sponge filter or even no filter at all had a very important bit. That bit being with regular & frequent WC. So yes, I am gatekeeping in the part about WC frequency. A 90 day WC schedule at 50% (if memory serves) is beyond what I think of as a good practice.

I've ran tanks in the past where water changes weren't even needed from a perspective of keeping nitrate under control. But that was because they were planted and lightly stocked. Nitrate was at a constant 0ppm.
But I still did water changes every once in a while, albeit less frequently than usual, because nitrate isn't the only factor to consider. Water changes are king for so many reasons, and everyone on here knows that.
The reason you've met with such hostility is because, to us, a 50% water change every three months, irrespective of what your parameters are (not that you know what they are anyway, which makes it even worse for you) just isn't part of the fish keeping rulebook, to us lot anyway.
