In ground pond vs raised pond

I think a raised pond works well for getting closer to your fish, also gaining more water volume. Here is mine it is about 3400 gallons it is raised about 20" above grade and is 5'-6" deep total.

    Koi dying?

Well he said they looked ok, usually with KHV you have sunken eyes and notched noses. From what I understand KHV is usually triggered by warm water temps and him being in Florida I would think it would have shown sooner than six years if some of the koi were infected. I am not saying it is not...

    Koi dying?

Well with that stocking rate and the lack of filtration I would bet it is a water quality issue, if that pump is pumping 3600gph (and most pumps do not pump what they are rated at after figuring head loss from pipes and fittings) you are looking at about a 4 hour turn over rate. Most koi keepers...

    Considering a Tropical Pond

Just be carefull you don't make a bomb, it is real hard to regulate the heat to keep from boiling the water in the coil and making steam. Make sure you use a good presure relief valve.

    Stacked lumber pond?

If you are planning koi stay away from submersible pumps, they just chop up the crap and make it harder to filter out. Your best bet is a settling chamber and then to your pump, this way you get the larger solids out before your pump. Koi get large and produce huge amounts of waste. For turn...

Lava rock and pebbles filled filter

Yes it is a upflow, I am running about 3500gph. I run my total pond volume through this once an hour from my skimmer. I also have a bottom drain circuit that gravity feeds 3500gph to a 250 gallon settling chamber and then a 100 gallon moving bed filter.

Lava rock and pebbles filled filter

Do a sand and gravel filter with a air manifold in the bottom to boil it clean, here is one I made for my pond in a 100 gallon cone bottom tank. I use a 2 HP spa blower to clean it once a week. Here you can see the air manifold I built, it acts as a support for the dog kennel grating. I...
