Big news for the amatitlania world

Keep us updated! And yes, definitely having a tank to themselves is a great idea. After all, we don't want their growth suppressed due to presence of other fish. :D

Ammonia still in water after cycling

It is very common for the API test kit to register 0.25ppm ammonia even though it is effectively zero. Since it was a while before you did a water change and it just registers 0.25ppm, yeah I'd consider it a false positive reading and treat it effectively as zero.

Breeding to cover cost of fishroom

I once made quite a bit of money selling my LFS my mystery snails. It was just kind of a chance thing - they were sold for like $10 a pop even for small ones, and the LFS was willing to give me $2 in cash per individual. And because a lot of people bought mystery snails, they were always willing...

    Cycling and PH

Your pH should always be what you intend for it to be long term. Different nitrifiers are adapted to different pH. Some are strictly acidophilic, growing only at a pH of 4-5.5, for example. So it is not like nitrification is strictly inhibited by a low pH or anything like that. Instead, you...

just a request of photos of hybrids between flowerhorns, red devil, jaguar, blood parrot, convict, rainbow, green texas and red terror.

They are two entirely different species. Texas cichlids are Herichthys cyanoguttatum, green texas cichlids are Herichthys carpintis. That is certainly true, however backcrossing is also the fastest way to resolve a lot of chromosomal misalignment issues sooner rather than later.

just a request of photos of hybrids between flowerhorns, red devil, jaguar, blood parrot, convict, rainbow, green texas and red terror.

Have you had a look at this thread: https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/the-big-cichlid-hybrid-example-thread-load-warning.491862/? I tried to check, seems like you have not, but am not super sure. It is early in the morning for me lol so eyesight's not 100% yet. Also, some of...

Your FAVORITE aquarium fish and why

Convict cichlid. Lot's of personality, lot's of variety in behaviors, easy to keep, lot's of variations in colors too. Love them.

    G. brasiliensis x Amatitlania nigrofasciata

There are certainly examples of CA/SA hybridizations. For example, red terrors will readily hybridize with many CA cichlids. Umbees too. So it is certainly possible.

Cant get ammonia levels to drop.

Is it kinda just at 0.25ppm now? In many tanks, there is a minute amount of constant ammonia (expected, it is what is produced but yet to be consumed). And the API test kit can pick this up and register 0.25ppm, even if it is much less and effectively considered zero. P.S. there is evidence to...

Cycling with driftwood, low PH should I raise the PH?

I mean Stability does give the illusion of cycling (by having non-nitrifiers that utilize ammonia as a nitrogen source), and a fast one at that, which is why a lot of people love it, not knowing it does not actually establish nitrifiers well. One red flag that is quite obvious is that a lot of...

Cycling with driftwood, low PH should I raise the PH?

    1. Seachem Stability is not suitable for cycling. It allegedly contains nitrifiers, yes, but also non-nitrifiers that can and do outcompete the nitrifiers - inhibiting the cycling process. These non-nitrifiers do also consume ammonia, but as a nitrogen source rather than an energy source. Short...

tried seachem stability on my 20 long

Stability is not suitable for cycling. It contains non-nitrifiers, which long term ain't great. Anyways, regardless, try FritzZyme TurboStart 700. It is the best bottled bac product on the market.

    Bio media?

Just an internal filter, yeah, stuck to one side of the aquarium. It was enough to filter a 100 gallon aquarium. Can't remember the specific brand and size of the filter though, but definitely a lot less biomedia in it compared to a 'standard' canister filter lol. Back then I used to clean it...

    Bio media?

I should add - there is a possibility that more biomedia (or surface area rather) may have some benefits. Population growth of microorganisms can be slower if the concentration of cells within an area is higher, as the cells compete against each other for the same resources. However, more...

    Bio media?

You are correct. :) We really don't need to load up our filters with biomedia. That's also why small filters now also work great, because with really good biomedia nowadays, even a small volume can work wonders. No need for canisters or sumps or anything.

    Freshwater sump advice

I would just have the floss foam in the second chamber (after the first crash chamber). Then I'd load the fourth chamber with biomedia and have just some floss foam on top to catch debris from the refugium. I might expand that fourth chamber to hold more biomedia, and the fifth chamber instead...

    OVERFILTRATION

Not sure what the numbers you are referring for means, but anyways a good goal to shoot for for overfiltration is 4ppm ammonia/day consumption rate, though some people do try for 8ppm.
