Put a gate valve after the pump and adjust the flow as necessary. Won't harm the pump as long as it's after the pump

Agree with DB. I would cut the teeth completely and leave it flat. Less restrictive and best for surface skimming. Water level will sit 1" above a smooth weir.

A hole too small will produce a strong stream and cause sound/turbulence at the surface. A hole too big will reduce flow pressure. As stated above, 1/8" is a good starting point

Clean the filter a week before you leave and add a teaspoon of ammonia and seal the canister. Hook it up with no fish and let it run until all ammonia is out of the water, 80-90% water change then add fish
