kinda following .... wouldn't you want a ball valve on your return line from the pump to the tank ??? Not necessarily to restrict flow to tank but to be able to do maintenance or service - turn ball valve off and keep water up above in tank ???

I will post a picture tonight. Built an acrylic 4' X 2' X 2' aquarium with a 55g sump tank below. About six inches from the top - a 2" bulk head strainer - gravity pvc drain line down to sump. Then push sump water back up to acrylic tank with a Mag 18. Mag 18 is left wide open. 2" gravity...
