Something to consider is that Betta's originate in rice paddies around a foot deep, not saying tall tanks won't work; but imo footprint over height would serve you well

Probably no evidence, but common sense would indicate it's not good for fish mental health. Equivalent is locking a person up in a tiled room, with nothing to interact with.

It's probably because the market for these YouTubers and aquascapers etc has rocketed in recent months, it used to be a couple of people making videos, then a handful, now there are tonnes. Not sure what's caused it, perhaps better publicity or the great products entering the marketing from...

my profile pic is an F1 Altum, and should be a good indication of how beautiful the species can get. Scalare are nice, Leopoldi not so much (imo), but Altums are superb. Bigger, more colourful, nicer shape, behaviour etc

Just feed less and they will disappear to manageable levels. In any case, there is an argument to be made for their presence, they are superb at cleaning up after messy fish etc

apparently they do that to align with the magnetic field of the earth or something, honestly lol. My dog when he was younger used to try and bite the waves in the sea when they splashed against his legs lol

softer water would be better, as mentioned above, in harder water I'd expect them to have shorter lifespans
