What's the secret to big Armatus?

Been a couple years since I’ve been on MFK. Just read up and I believe chicxlub was referring to me about keeping a GATF that grew to basically almost 2 feet in a 2 feet wide tank. I also kept an armatus that was around the same size in an slightly larger tank that was around 3feet wide. They...

    Channa diplogramma

To be fair, the diplo was never really that aggressive especially to large tankmates. Also, I had to relocate my fish to this tank and the armatus as already the established alpha. The diplo was able to coexist for a few months actually until some puncture wounds from the underside via deadly...

    Channa diplogramma

Very unfortunate that the diplo has passed away after I moved her into another community tank with a large Armatus that was too aggressive.... :( almost reached exactly two foot when she past away... quite girthy..

    Moving my big bad wolf!

Hahahaha bro!!! I love it! You got a new bad boy beast after I said I couldn’t find your old at the facility anymore lol. But yeah man this one looks identical to the meter monsters being imported to china. They cost a pretty penny..... and will take your hand off.

    Hydrocynus ID please

For the most part if not always, ATF will fight amongst each other to vye for dominance. I still remember when my smaller VATF would boss around a bigger GATF but was at the very bottom of the totem pole with other tank mates. I find doradoes to be the best schooling monster characin. They take...

    RIP to my Monster Armatus

As of right now, my fish stock has dwindled down significantly. I do not have any more characins until I have more time to rebuild. Downsized on the stock over the years. I recently lost my Channa diplogramma which was also around this same size along with my RTGG and wild Columbian Oscar. Right...

    RIP to my Monster Armatus

Ahhhh so this has been an common occurrence for large armatus in captivity?? It was doing so well though, hitting defrosted loaches intensely which was way healthier than large live feeders. Oh well, I’ll update this again when I finish getting her taxidermied.

    Some absolute monster Vampires

Wonderful experience it must have been. Huge armatus, the one in the 4th picture has a small tail interestingly enough reminds me of a scomb.

    RIP to my Monster Armatus

Cloudy eyes and started swimming in an imbalanced manner. It’s very hard to treat especially with a tank with stingrays as well. I couldn’t just load a ton of salt either. I just did water changes every 12 hours and heated up the water as much I could which isn’t easy with a large body of water.

    RIP to my Monster Armatus

Have had her for almost 3 years I reckon. Had a couple other Armatus starting out together and this was clearly the dominant one and one got wrecked by her aggression another lost a from a move but both were not as strong as this one which is definitely sad for me to see her go. At least now I...

    RIP to my Monster Armatus

so it happened guys.. the day that I would dread occurred. I lost my 21.5” armatus due to a bacterial infection that wasn’t treated to fast/effective enough. Hard as hell to handle with care especially with those fangs... take a look at this beautiful beast... sure gonna miss her. I’m gonna...

    Massive tank -Thailand

Here are some more fatalities, i forget what the cause was but she said that this monster gatf is just moody and sometimes just makes a dash for tankmates. Some of us may think it a small chase and clean bite to the tail or something but it’s actually happening at much more fatal spots from...

    Massive tank -Thailand

See it’s in my opinion and experience that there are at least two subtypes of gatf, while they both grow massively large and are apex predators, one is obviously broader top down and grow ridiculously fast, (I’ve kept a dozen gatf before and one has outgrew all the rest by a multiplier. Some of...

Trilogy of Fantasy Fish Battle: The Winner

From my own experience having kept both species together in a tank where they accepted each other but also fought skirmishes occasionally, the edge goes to the dorado due to speed and accuracy. The aimara has a horrible temper but dorado is more a police patrolling territory. They usually keep...

They supposedly are able to out grow rhoms in nature probably only second to piraya in size.

    C diplogramma laser blue

Yeah a lot of diplogramma seem to look a bit more turquoise blue than the blue seen of mine. I’m guessing it’s just not at that color phase yet.

Every good story comes to an end... the death of my monster GATF

Cheers everyone, I appreciate all the comments. Indeed it’s unfortunate to lose these beautiful monsters. I’m contemplating if I should taxidermy my brasi dorado as well but it’s only around 40cm ish which is considerably smaller than my gatf. My manueli was about 6.5”-7” guesstimating as...
