    The aftermath of Ich?

parameters are fine, nitrates are still low. but who knows what else is in there that we don't have a test kit for. the 125g has a 75g sump, i figured there was around 140 total gallons in the system. I'll do a 50% w/c and add salt for 70 gallons. I'll try the garlic method. hopefully...

    The aftermath of Ich?

Hey guys. I've been keeping fish for about a decade and this is the section on the forums I never want to start a thread in. I've been lucky and I've been pretty safe. I've had 1 run in with Ich about 5 years ago and no other major illnesses. I just setup my 125g and my tank situation was in...

Starting from scratch - my small budget fishroom/125g SA tank build.

I've been lazy about documenting the rest of the build. I made a hard push and finished the tank. there are fish swimming in it as we speak. I will post some more detailed follow up later in the week if anyone is interested. approximately 1800gph (maybe 1200 at head) 5 drains 75g sump...

I'm just a guy with a grade 12 education who likes to drink beer. but right now... i feel like an engineer. I'll let you guys know if i stand by that statement when i test the system with water.

Starting from scratch - my small budget fishroom/125g SA tank build.

time for a small update. I've been super busy. just got back from vacation. :) started working on the plumbing. all 5 of the 1' drains go to a 3' manifold with a single outlet to the sump here's the 4 return nozzles. gray schedule 80 pvc in the display for cosmetic reasons. 950 and...

Starting from scratch - my small budget fishroom/125g SA tank build.

9 cans of polyurethane spray foam later... the decor and everything is finished. i just have to do a few things to the stand, and complete the plumbing and its all done. the pictures don't really do it justice. i think it turned out ok. the tank is about 50-100lbs heavier with the...

Starting from scratch - my small budget fishroom/125g SA tank build.

I'm lucky to get a couple hours per week to work on this. I drilled the last 2 holes, completing the total of 5 drains. I've never drilled a hole on a vertical surface. it presented some challenges and made a huge mess, even with a large rubbermaid tote on the floor below where I was working...

thanks for the kind words! i have finished the background. finally! the bottom substrate will be a tile bottom. big fish also poop big and I want this to be super simple to keep clean. you can see the first row of tile butted up against the background. i wanted the decor to match the...

Starting from scratch - my small budget fishroom/125g SA tank build.

i started the background with nylon mesh and light diffuser grid. this will work to reinforce it. I marked the locations for all my fake plants and secured anchors to the grid that will stick up. the background substrate is greatstuff pond and stone with play sand mixed in. according to the...

it's pvc city over here. $120 at the local home improvement store. i am looking at 5x 1" drains converging to a single 3" manifold that runs to the sump. I'm doing all fake plants in this setup. pretty much everything will be put into place permanently with silicone adhesive. large SA...

    Methods to lower nitrate

I agree. I used to feed 5-6 days a week and I've settled on feeding every other day. I also agree with duanes, you need a ton of very fast growing plants to take advantage of nutrient export. decrease stocking, feed less. the solution to pollution is dilution! more water and less fish!

Starting from scratch - my small budget fishroom/125g SA tank build.

drilling 3 of the 5 holes tonight. I hate drilling glass. normally I drudge around at a couple hundred rpms, nervously scoring the glass. well this stuff is ridiculously thick and I don't have all day. time to down some liquid courage and crank it up to the maximum 1650rpms. safety first. 3...

    Critique my intake plumbing

the siphon on my bean overflow could handle about 1300gph through a 1" gate valve. if your dead set on a ball valve, King Brothers (KBI) make a smooth ball valve. from my experience they sometimes leak slowly when they are totally shutoff, but they are by far the smoothest and nicest...

    Critique my intake plumbing

i have never found a gate valve locally, but they are like $10 for a 1" and I'm sure under $20 for a 1.5"... trust me when i say that a gate valve is worth it for this kind of setup. your setup looks very clean and well thought out. my only other recommendation would possibly be the addition...

How much would a 220 weigh?

it all depends where it's going. when I moved my 125 with friend we used heavy duty wood ramps to slide it off of the truck and onto a small 4 caster wooden furniture dolly. we only really picked it up when we had to set it on the stand. we also used cardboard and slid it down the stairs...

    Old aquarium bottom seam

it's doable, but I'm not good at it. I've had some older tanks that i was throwing away. I tried to disassemble them for fun. i have not been very successful. if you do a full reseal/rebuild, look at buying new plastic trim pieces for the top and bottom. the trim always seem to break for...

Merry Christmas to me. I got two 660gph (55w) pumps off of amazon for $36 shipped. i will be putting these pumps in some of my older/smaller setups that i have running. this will free up my 950gph danner mag drive and my 793gph aqueon submersible pump for my 125g project. I've got...
