Very enjoyable. Looking forward to more.

    Calling all Frontosa keepers

I kept things pretty simple. I don't have frontosas at present but have had on three occasions. These were wild caught Kapampa in a 135 gallon that never did spawn for me. I have had mpimbwe on two separate occasions in both a 135 and a 180 gallon tank. One group was wild caught, the other not...

Red Marks Appearing - Gills, Mouth, Edges of Fish

These are juvenile Venustus. Had them three months. Eating fine and getting along. Just noticed this the other day on two of the five. What causes it? Name of disease? Will it get worse and infect all fish? Is it treatable?

Suggestions For Growing Up N. Venustus For Potential Breeding?

Here are a couple of pics. I can see they are bigger than when I got them in November. Slightly longer, but I am especially noticing that they are a lot bigger top to bottom more so than head to tail size change.

Suggestions For Growing Up N. Venustus For Potential Breeding?

Sure. I will take some pics in the next day or two. Still juveniles but you will be able to see what they look like now.

Suggestions For Growing Up N. Venustus For Potential Breeding?

That does sound like pretty speedy growth. Given that mine started out at 2.5 inches in November, maybe by early summer genders may become apparent.

    Tropheus

Never lost a fish in the 180. In the 90 gallon on two occasions I lost a quarter of the fish. Was it the tank size, the tropheus variety? A disease? I have no idea. They seemed to get along. In all cases the fish were juveniles raised together with only one variety in the tank.

    Tropheus

On two occasions I had thirty Tropheus in a 180 gallon and that worked out fine. I have kept fifteen in a 90 gallon but breeding activity seemed less and more water changes.

    Refilling the Tanks for 2024

After getting back into fish keeping just over twenty years ago, I have had anywhere from one to five tanks on the go. Even though I have had tanks operating continually , I kind of had lost interest in fish the last couple years as fish were not spawning and some fish were dying. I sold off two...

Suggestions For Growing Up N. Venustus For Potential Breeding?

So I went with seven venustus in November with an average length of 2.5 inches. They are in a 90 gallon tank. As they grow I will find out the male/female ratios and we will go from there.

    135 gallon cichlid stocking help

Of the two fish you mention, the blue dolphins are the only one have have kept. As adults I would think a 90 gallon tank and up is good. They are tough to sex when young and from my experience quite slow growing to maturity. Those might be negative qualities but I think they are nice fish and...

    UK price of running tank

Maybe this would be useful, I don't know. My 90 gallon (360 litre) tank is in my heated basement in Canada. I monitored electrical costs for November. The room temperature averages 20C and I like to keep the tank at 25 C - so a 5 C increase. I have a 300W heater. To do that, I used about 63.4 KW...

Mag Float size L or M for 125g?

I had a medium that I used on a 6 foot long, 135 gallon tank. At that point I already had the medium size for a 90 gallon and it worked well enough on the 135 that I wasn't going to buy another just for that size of tank. Maybe had I owned no scraper, different story; I might have gone for the...

Aquarium heaters - sizing and lifespan ?

Well Danny 1018, I see you read my article and saw I was paying 6 cents per kilowatt hour. That was five years ago and I now pay 7.9 cents. Still pretty cheap I suppose. The other factor in electrical costs are the "fixed" charges not related much to consumption. I do not add these into my...

Aquarium heaters - sizing and lifespan ?

Thanks to the last two posts. I have heard of people using the two heater approach. I never got into that train of thought but it sounds like there could be some sense in it. Thanks for sharing.

Aquarium gravel okay to use in place of sand ?

I have tried pool filter sand as well. It seemed the fish would spit it near the filter intake tubes and inevitably some would get suckled in from time to time. Maybe I will go back to it at some point. The sand I admit, does look nice.

Aquarium gravel okay to use in place of sand ?

When I got back into the fish hobby 20 years ago I went with a gravel tank as that is what I had always done. Then I saw on fish forums that many were using sand for cichlids. So I took out the gravel - what a mess - debris really accumulated. I liked the look of sand plus debris settled on top...

Aquarium heaters - sizing and lifespan ?

I think your example of 300 W / 7 h and 200 W / 11h is a good one and I think in that example either would work fine. The electricity consumption is about the same and the time running is reasonable. A heater 100% on for months on end seems like it would overwork the heater. A 200 W heater in a...

    LED Longevity on Aquariums?

Would LEDs designed specifically for saltwater situations be typically of better quality than those with freshwater in mind, or not necessarily so?

    LED Longevity on Aquariums?

Having never done saltwater fish, I am not familiar with Coralcare. I assume that is LED you are talking about.
