Of course, now the apparently masochistic side of me wonders if I were to dole out a ton of money on a school of full grown males if they would survive having introduced them while everyone is still decently small.
But my original thought was to use them as sort of a dither fish to keep them...
It'll be awhile before they are moved to their permanent home since I have to save up for an actual tank. The tote is just to get my current fish out of their MASSIVELY overstocked tank of 55g (I know, it was originally just the BGK and my friends who meant well but aren't in the hobby bought me...
Congos could survive a full grown Oscar? Or do you mean short term? I know they're less likely to eat tall bodied fish, but I figured Congos were just small enough to still be considered a buffet item. Although it would be cool if they did make it. I would assume they'd all have to be males...
Thanks for the info. Do you think the 10" Del would be "safe" from the Oscars down the road?
Also, I've posted before about keeping BGK with Polys and people said they've done it successfully you just have to get compatible sizes which is what I'm trying to figure out. Unfortunately, I don't...
Oh man, what size d’you folks think would be “safe?” I’d probably have to order online and they seem to be around the 4” mark.
@Moose What are the odds of a 4 incher taking a bite out of one of my fish if they grow up together? Is that just a known risk with bichirs regardless of size or is...
I'm going to be moving some fish to their semi-permanent home soon(it's a massive 300 gallon tote, huge score at $200, while I save up for an actual tank which is why it's semi) and want to have all intended inhabitants quarantined and good to go so I can add them all at once and not have to...
Sorry to bump an old thread, but did the fish end up having a disease or something that you were able to treat?
My juvenile Oscar has the same thing going on, no other symptoms at all.
I quickly went from having a reasonable load in a 55g and having a month or so to upgrade to "good lord I need to upgrade yesterday" when my friends decided to surprise me with some fish a few days after seeing my tank and showing photos of my intended stock. Apparently, "hey, look at the cool...
Thanks! Should I stick with their usual pellet food for soaking with the MetroPlex? Sorry, for all the questions, just wanna make sure I give them the best chance for getting over this.
Thank you! I have another Oscar in the tank with him but he is not showing any symptoms, do you recommend that I treat him anyways since they were purchased from the same tank and kept together so far? Not sure how easily transferable what I’m dealing with is and the only way to separate the two...
I recently got an Oscar at a box pet store and from the day I brought him home his uhhh fishy butt has been swollen and he has white poop, not stringy. He’s in a 20g quarantine tank, daily water changes ammonia & nitrites are 0 and nitrate is pretty dang close to 0 with the daily changes. I’m...
Sadly I live in MA and don’t have one, at least that I know of. Had to buy from my LFS today since they only have really small ones. It’ll be a few months at least before I get moving on this set up so hopefully he’ll get some decent length on him by the time I’m bringing the other stock in.
Thanks for the info! What species would you recommend I add to the mix? Should I avoid adding any lower jaw species? There would be a BGK, an Oscar, a fire mouth, and a texas cichlid in there too if that makes a difference.
They wouldn't pair up and beat the crap out of each other? I've never kept more than one so I don't know, but that doesn't seem like a lot of space for 6.
Thanks, definitely something to consider. Might have to look into purchasing something I could use as a temporary divider during feeding time if I do go through with this stocking plan.
Any thoughts on keeping more than one Bichir in the same tank? I'm planning a 240g (96x24x25") and was hoping to keep an Ornate and Delhezi together. Is it possible? Any tips for long term success or should I avoid mixing and just get one? Also, could they live long term with a black ghost...
The smaller fish wouldn't get eaten? Any specific species come to mind? I'm new to the whole "what can live long term with my soon to be 12"+ monster" game.
