Never used sand so I can't comment on cleaning for that. But larger water change is always better, and you remove all the poop also. For my 50 I do once a week 50% water change plus daily spot cleaning(vac poop off the bottom) which comes out to about 5 gallons of water every spot cleaning. More...

To my knowledge you can try daily water changes at around 40-50% and treat with metro+, bifuran, and salt. If he eats would be a good idea to get him on a anti-bacterial foods. Keep temperature low, in the 70's. I have no experience with treating this disease so don't know how well this method...

If your doing it tap to tank you treat for the entire tank volume. If your doing it bucket to tank you treat each individual bucket for the bucket volume before adding to the tank. Sent from my iPhone using MonsterAquariaNetwork app
