Is there anyway to have a suitable substrate for plants while having the top layer consist of sand?

Planted tank, not planet tank haha

I'm setting up a new tank next week, and I wanted to make it a planted tank. I want to use a dark grey/black sand as the top layer of substrate, but I'm not sure what bottom layer(s) to use. I don't I can use something like EcoComplete because it will mix up with the sand. Anyone have any advice?

I have 4 sengals with an oscar in my 60 gal. They got along well, the only problem is the oscar is pig when it comes to feeding. Usually I just throw in some sinking pellets at night once the lights are out.

try feeding it Hikari pellets, either carnivore or cichlid sinking. They are loaded with vitamins and minerals and really help with the growth and color of your fish.
